This intermediate class is a members-only class that covers proper use of HackPGH's new Grizzly 3HP Shaper.

What is a Shaper? In woodworking, it's a machine used to shape the edges of stock wood. Shapers have a rotating cutter (not a bit) mounted on a spindle that the operator manually feeds the stock against. The cutter head has multiple cutting edges and rotates at high speeds. Shapers are more powerful and flexible than routers, and can take larger cuts in one pass. However, they can be more dangerous which is why successful completion of this class or demonstration of competence to a Shop Lead is required before independent use of HackPGH's Shaper!

The following topics will be covered:

  • The main parts of the Shaper and its general purpose
  • Safe use of the Shaper, collets, and cutters
  • Application of skills by creating trim and raised panel doors. The class will compete one raised panel door together as a cohort.

Date and time: Sunday, January 19th from 1:00pm-4:00pm

Prerequisites: Active HackPGH Membership required. This is not a class for beginners! Prior woodworking experience or successful completion of our Intro to Woodworking class is required.
