Join us at HackPGH and learn how to create Pysanky, beautifully decorated eggs using a centuries-old Ukrainian technique! A pysanka (Ukrainian: писанка) is an egg decorated with traditional folk designs using a wax-resist method. The word pysanka comes from the verb pysaty, “to write”, as the designs are not painted on, but written or "inscribed" with beeswax.
Using a stylus called a kistka, students in this class will write with melted beeswax onto the shell of a clean, emptied chicken egg**. They will then dip it into vibrant dyes. Participants will take home their own pysanka. This is a great homemade keepsake to display, give as a gift, hang on the Christmas tree, and much more!
**Fake eggs (wooden and plastic) will be made available for those who would like to use them, but we cannot guarantee that the dye results will be the same as traditional chicken eggs.
Safety note: We will be using candles in this class, so please keep all long hair tied back and be extra cautious if you have acrylic nails.
